Description

This is 9 Panel Mosaic Field around the 3rd magnitude star  Alnasal in Sagittarius, somewhat inspired by a nice thumping big copy of Edward Emerson Barnards's A Photographic Atlas of Selected Regions of the Milky Way I bought a few years back.  A fabulous and inspirtational book  from an era when Astrophotography was serious hard work; it still is, but now we do it from the warm comfort of indoors rather than hours freezing manual guiding at an eyepiece. This is an area within Plate 27 of that mighty tome. It consumed quite a lot of my time back in August 2020 and I was never comfortable with the processing result. Even with a 28 core Threadripper and 128 Gb of Ram and CUDA running flat out, this still takes a LOT of time to re-process.

The Red blob is Baade's Window.

So the moral of the story is, mosaics are for chumps.

Something llike a RedCat 71 with a 6x4 degree field of view would be better suited as would a nice dark sky far, far away from light pollution deep in the Australia outback.
